Dear reader(s) –

I apologize for the precipitous drop in blog posts. The past few days have been a little hectic, because we moved into a new apartment (which, in Nairobi, is a multi-day process). But we are getting settled into the new place, and hopefully life should calm down soon.

Now that we have left our temporary housing, I can say with some confidence: I did not like it.

Between the horde of psychopathic feral cats (“Diablo” being the ringleader, but his comrades were increasingly bold in their advances as time passed), the institutional (read: asylum) florescent lighting, and the nagging sense of being observed all the time (“HEY! I KNOW YOU! Lady with the big, white dog!!”), I began to feel a little Girl: Interrupted.

Add endless reruns of “Kindergarten Cop” and the incessant nighttime croaking of a frog – which, by the way, had NO DISCERNABLE PATTERN and drove me to sleep on the couch with earplugs on more than one occasion – and you can see why I was looking forward to a change of scenery.

So, change the scenery we did. We moved to a beautiful apartment in Kileleshwa that had belonged to two of N’s colleagues before they left the country. Our landlord has met and approved the dog, there is only one cat on the grounds and it is appropriately frightened, we are buying lampshades, and the rooms are full of sun and breezes.

We’re still getting set up – buying furniture, household items, and pesky necessities like a vacuum cleaner – but I can already tell that living here is going to be a vast improvement over our former lodging. I will post some photos when the rooms are filled with more than open boxes, but for now, here are some pictures of the view:
